Window shopping….Internet Style

Every once in a while I like to cruise the web for gourmet food websites to look at, even better is when they offer their catalog in hard copy form. I like to see what the going rate for an ounce of Beluga caviar is ($500), or how much it costs to have a 3 lb. Maine lobster delivered to your door the next day ($300) or maybe acquiring a pound of handmade XXX  Grand Marnier truffles from an old friend/classmate at the CIA ($62 at  http://www.cateringchocolate.com/home.html.)

Here are a few of my favorites:

http://www.deandeluca.com/. I always visit this place whenever I’m in NYC. There are several locations but I go to their flagship store in Rockefeller Center, if you’re a frequent viewer of the Today Show you have probably noticed their store front in the background. They offer all kinds of gourmet food from meats and seafood to oil and vinegars to cheese. Dean & Deluca will send their catalog to you if you request one on the website.

http://shop.legalseafoods.com/index.cfm. The first time I had their New England clam chowder was at Fenway Park while catching a Red Sox game many years ago. I have always said that that chowder was the best I have ever had, and eating it in the cozy confines of Fenway sure didn’t hurt. If you are ever jonesing for raw Quincy Bay oysters and you don’t feel like taking a road trip, this is the place. You can also get a catalog from Legal Seafood by request.

http://www.beverlyhillscaviar.com/.

As the name suggests, this place has some ridiculous products. Take for example caviar for your cat or dog, escargot caviar, 24 carat gold caviar (seriously?) and vegan caviar. They offer one of the more unusual foods you’ll ever see; for a mere $1250 you can get yourself a whole hot smoked alligator! Surprisingly they only offer an online catalog.

If you ever find yourself with a pocket full of cash that’s burning a hole in it, any of these purveyors of fine foods would be more than happy to accept your splurge money for their fine products.
