The Fairport-East Rochester Post asked Jefferson Avenue school psychologist Joe Carello a few questions for our weekly teacher profile.

How and why did you decide to become an educator?

“I decided to become an educator after interning as a guidance counselor in college. I was a psychology major and knew I wanted to counsel, but after interning in a school, I wanted to be able to do both. School psychology was that opportunity.

What are the greatest challenges in education today?

“I think the greatest challenge to education today is the ever increasing expectations paired with limited time and larger class sizes. Students and teachers are expected and capable of doing amazing things. However, at times, it seems that everything is contingent on time and thus ends up being rushed. Everyone feels stressed and rushed.

Who is a teacher or professor who inspired you and how?

“I didn’t have a teacher that inspired me to become an educator but I am inspired to keep working by the administrators and colleagues I work with now. They really do amazing work and I am fortunate to work and learn from them everyday.”

What is your favorite part of your job?

“The greatest part of my job is watching children who struggle early on in their school careers develop and mature. Through hard work they overcome obstacles and it is great to be able to watch that.”
