The Fairport Board of Education has a new president for the 2010-11 school year.
The board elected Ken Kathan as president and re-elected Tom McJury as vice president. Joyce Kostyk served as president this past year.
“I feel good, I’ve been on the board for three years and I think it’s a good step in the maturation process of being a board member,” Kathan said.
Both men agreed that having all of last year’s board members return will be an asset.
“That’s certainly an asset because there’s no learning curve,” McJury said. “The learning curve is tremendous on the board with all of the New York state laws surrounding education.”
Kathan said the board has discussed goals for the new school year and will finalize them over the summer. McJury feels finances are going to be a key issue.
“If we thought last year was bad from a New York state standpoint, it’s going to be worse this year,” he said. “Our biggest focus when we sit down to do our goals is really providing the best value In education.”
Kathan, 50, is the vice president of finance at BCC Software, Inc. He and his wife Chris have one daughter, Melissa, who is enrolled in Fairport schools.
McJury, 47, has served on the board since 2005. He is the customer retention/post-sale revenue manager for Xerox. He and his wife Lori have three children: Kyle, who graduated from Fairport High School in 2009, and Connor and Moira, who are currently enrolled in Fairport schools.
