Senior goalie Blaze Riorden made 16 saves to lead the Fairport boys lacrosse team to an 8-5 victory over Irondequoit on Thursday.

Riorden and the rest of the Red Raider (16-0) defense gained control of the game in the first three quarters as the high-powered Eagles (14-2) were held scoreless in the second and third quarters. Fairport built a 7-1 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Brian Martin quickly gave the Red Raiders an advantage as the senior midfielder scored 33 seconds into the first quarter. Martin led the Fairport offense recording three goals.

Irondequoit senior attacker Nick Doktor gave Irondequoit their opening goal of the contest scoring with 2:10 left in the first quarter. Doktor finished with a game-high four goals for the Eagles.

Irondequoit’s momentum was short-lived as Pat VanBortle scored 31 seconds after Doktor’s first goal. The Red Raiders gained a 3-1 advantage going into the second quarter following a goal by senior midfielder Andrew Brennan.

The second quarter started similar to the first, as Fairport quickly gained the momentum as VanBortle scored 25 seconds into the quarter. Brennan and Kevin Vaughn scored later in the quarter to give the Red Raiders a 6-1 lead going into halftime.

Martin tallied the only goal of the third quarter as Fairport gained a 7-1 advantage heading into the fourth.

The Eagles quickly went to work in the fourth as Doktor scored 35 seconds into the final period. Gunnar Miller scored less than a minute later to bring Irondequoit within 7-3 with 10:47 remaining in the fourth.

Martin scored 56 seconds after Miller’s tally to give the Red Raiders a five-goal cushion with just under 10 minutes remaining. Doktor responded for the Eagles, scoring two goals one minute apart to cut the deficit to 8-5 with 3:39 remaining in the game.

Fairport was able to maintain possession late in the game to secure the victory.

Both teams will enter the postseason as arguably the favorites in their brackets. The Red Raiders will most likely be the top seed in the Class A tournament, while Irondequoit will look to defend the Class B title.
