April Mickys has been cutting kids’ hair long enough to see a few tears shed — and many times it’s the parents.
“Lots of mothers cry the first time,” she said. “I think it’s just a rite of passage, like the first day of driving.”
Herself a mother of three, Mickys, 42, works with daughters Krystal, a stylist at the studio, and Kayla Newcomb, who helps fill in when needed. Haircuts for Peanuts celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. It first opened in the Village of Fairport in 2001 but moved to its current location in Perinton Square Mall, where it's been since 2003.
In March, it added 1,000 square feet to accommodate birthday parties with a Red Carpet theme. The new space has a small stage and, of course, a red carpet, and is geared toward kids that are a little too old to be watching “Dora the Explorer.”
“By opening this up, the older kids won’t feel like their going to a pediatrician’s office,” said Mickys.
While the glamour parties are intended for girls, Mickys hopes to host rock and roll parties for boys, where instead of girly up-dos they can get their hair spiked and play RockBand with their friends. In addition to parties, the space will also be used to sell hair products and accessories.
The atmosphere is colorful and kid-friendly, with bright shades of purple, yellow and green on the walls and TV sets playing Nickelodeon in each room.
“It’s so kid-friendly,” said Tricia Gibson, who comes from Webster to bring her daughter Daniella, 4, to get a trim. “Where else can you eat popcorn and Skittles and watch Scooby Doo while you get your hair cut?”
