A new hometown sports apparel store, Eastside Sports, opens doors at Four Corners this week.
Owner Mary Kay Cummings first got the idea to open Eastside Sports when she was looking for shirts for her children who play Penfield youth sports.
As she started shopping, she noticed that it was difficult to find a nearby retailer that sold the Penfield apparel she was looking for.
“There’s nowhere to walk in and get it unless you go online, and I’m not an online shopper,” said Cummings, 41.
So about six months ago, she brought her request before the town when she learned the space at Four Corners, which used to house Divine Hair, would soon become available.
The Town Board gave the shop the green light last month, and Cummings will open her store on Tuesday, May 8.
The 41-year-old continues to own and operate a hair salon in Fairport, Studio 36, which she’s run for the last 10 years.
Penfield Patriot school spirit runs her family. Both she and her husband are Penfield graduates, and they have three children who attend school in the district.
You’ll find plenty of red, white, and black inside the quaint space. Shoppers can choose from everything from sweatshirts, shorts, tank tops, duffle bags, and even flip-flops.
Teams or groups of 24 or more can place orders for items that will be printed off-site and delivered to the store.
But customers don’t need to just be involved in sports, however. While clothing will be seasonal, it’ll also be fashionable — what the owner calls sports apparel “with a twist.”
As the shop grows, it will not just be restricted to Penfield, but will also sell clothing for other east-side school districts like Fairport, Webster, and Pittsford.
By giving local families a place to shop, Cummings said she’s most looking forward to making this easier for them to show their school pride.
“I’m looking for parents to be able to shop with and for their children and have something in their hands when they leave,” she said.
