This Friday marks the opening of the American Celtic Art Show in Fairport.
The show features the work of eight artists including Steve O’Loughlin, Cynthia Matyi, Patrick Gallagher, Jen Delyth, Michael Carroll, Lisa Laughy, Alec MacCrea and Ed Rooney, whose work combines traditional elements of Celtic art with contemporary styles.
The show will give residents the opportunity to view new works of pottery, oil paintings, wood, metal pieces based on traditional Celtic art forms, created by American artists.
This is the first time the traveling exhibit has come to the Rochester area. It was first started in 2000 by the artists themselves, and has been featured in art and heritage centers, as well as colleges and galleries around the country.
Stephen Walker, owner of Walker Metalsmiths Celtic Jewelry in Fairport, jumped at the chance to bring the show to town. This opportunity grew when the space next to the shop moved out, leaving two rooms available for an exhibit.
Good timing
With Saint Patrick’s Day just around the corner, Walker said it’s only fitting to hold an art show of this kind.
“Suddenly we had the space in the month of March when everybody’s thinking about Celtic and Irish things, so it’s the luck of the Irish,” said Walker.
Scott Winner, director of the Fairport Partnership said this also enhances Fairport’s niche as a center for all things Irish, with pubs like Donnelly’s and Mulconry’s located right in the village near Walker’s shop.
“These places have really begun to create synergy, and this show enforces the face that we’re a little hub of Irish culture in the Rochester region,” said Winner.
For charity
To celebrate the occasion the Monroe County Ancient Order of Hibernians, in conjunction with McCormack Productions has created an “American Celtic Art Show” poster that will be sold at the event.
All proceeds benefit the Irish Children's Program of Rochester, which sponsors the visitation of an equal number of Catholic and Protestant children from Belfast, Northern Ireland to Rochester each summer.
