Setup is under way today, Friday, June 1, for the running of the annual Greater Rochester Soap Box Derby tomorrow, Saturday, June 2, on "derby hill," on Lake Shore Boulevard in Irondequoit.

To accommodate the event, Lake Shore Boulevard, which runs along Durand Eastman beach in Irondequoit, is now closed to "through" traffic between Kings Highway North and Horseshoe Road in Durand Eastman Park. The road is expected to reopen tomorrow (Saturday) evening, after the racing.

Spectators may watch this year's 66 young competitors, ranging in age from 7 to 17, from about 9 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m. tomorrow, June 2.

Once setup for the event is complete today, practice runs will go on, weather permitting, tonight (June 1).

Tomorrow's event is rain or shine.

The winners in each of five divisions will be crowned local champions and earn the right to compete in the International Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, on July 21.
