The lift bridge over the Erie Canal in Fairport will be closed to drivers for repairs starting next Monday, Jan. 21.

The bridge will be closed for approximately six weeks while the New York State Department of Transportation performs repairs to the deteriorating structural steel components.

NYSDOT spokeswoman Lori Maher said the repairs will help extend the service life of the bridge, which was built a century ago.

“The disruption will be temporary and the improvement will be permanent,” said Ken Moore, Fairport village administrator. “Certainly, the state who owns the bridge regrets there’s inconveneice invovled. Such things are necessary because we’re going to mantain the bridge in the future and make it a reliable structure.”

The sidewalk will remain open for pedestrians and bicyclists. A detour for drivers will be posted using Church Street, Turk Hill Road and High Street. A truck detour will follow Ayrault, Turk Hill, and Whitney Roads.
