Crest Manor, a residential rehabilitation center in Perinton, is planning a $7.5 million expansion and renovation project that includes adding a new rehabilitation center this year.

John Bartholomew, Crest Manor president and CEO, said that the single-story 12,700 square-foot addition will serve as a rehabilitation area that will be connected to the existing three-story building.

“It took us a long time to get to this point, and a lot of work,” said Bartholomew. “We have an excellent plan and look forward to getting this thing built.”

He said that the addition provide more space for residents living in the main residential building by reducing the number of beds per floor.

According to the tentative plan, 20 beds will be brought into the new building and split into two areas, each with a living room, dining room and common area. The upper floors will be rearranged so that every 15 residents will have their own self-contained area, or “pod.”

This expansion will be the second major addition of its kind at Crest Manor — the first was in 1994, when office space, a therapy room, and an activity room were added.

“I’m very optimistic about this because it’s meeting some of the moderate needs we have for existing residents and future ones coming in,” said Bartholomew.

As the aging population continues to grow in Perinton, the town has made an effort to provide more senior living opportunities.

“Our town comprehensive plan emphasizes having options for our senior residents, or those who will soon be seniors,” said Mike Doser, director of code enforcement and development for the town of Perinton. “Ultimately we’d like to see our older residents maintain living in Perinton and have different options.”

Crest Manor is a family-owned business that operates three nursing homes in the Rochester area. Construction on the new project is planned to start Oct. 1, and will continue until summer 2014.
