Republican Mark Johns (R-Webster) has won his second straight term, defeating Democratic challenger David Koon in the race for the 135th State Assembly District.

Johns won 51.17 percent of the vote to Koon's 48.77 percent. He first defeated Koon in 2010 in another close race.

"Nothing's more satisfying that a 51 to 49 percent victory," said Johns. "We managed to eke out a win."

The district includes towns of Webster, Penfield, Perinton and East Rochester.

During the campaign season, both candidates said they would work to create jobs and improve the economy if elected.

Koon, 65, of Fairport, served 15 years in the Assembly. He said this will be the end of his career in politics.

"I did not run a negative campaign ever in my career," said Koon. "I would like to thank all the people who voted for me and supported me all those years."
