On Jan. 18, Monroe Community College hosts “Pathways to Entrepreneurial Success III,” a community forum that pairs experts from corporate and academic backgrounds to provide budding startups the information, connections and resources they need to become successful.
“Whether someone is starting a business, thinking of starting one or currently owns one and is seeking new strategies to make that business prosper, there has never been a better time in the history of our country to be in that position than now,” says Dr. Jeffrey M. Shepard, event chair of Pathways to Entrepreneurial Success III and president and CEO of East Coast Medical Equipment, Inc., based in Rochester, N.Y. “This program will provide participants with the tools necessary to make their dream a reality.”
The keynote speaker at the event is Tom Herman, president of Adventures in Entrepreneurship, who has more than 15 years of experience in startup businesses and is one of the two entrepreneurs featured in the documentary, “Startup.com.” Herman is a celebrity among entrepreneurs, having grown a business from one person to 400 employees in less than two years in the “.com” boom. The story of how he raised millions and lost it all in that era, “Startup.com” is the number-one watched video among entrepreneurial students at colleges and universities. He has led technical strategy, software architecture, fundraising and mergers and acquisitions of technical assets and is also currently partner at KCP Capital, investing and consulting with digital media clients. Herman has expertise in providing capital, business strategy support, restructuring skills, product and online marketing guidance.
Conference breakout sessions will address key topics such as: choosing the right business entity structure; raising capital; intellectual property protection; maximizing cash flow and minimizing taxes; knowing whether or not to define one’s self as an entrepreneur; what it really takes to be a successful entrepreneur and social networking and marketing strategies for startup businesses.
Speakers include: Arthur Catalanello, vice president, senior research officer at Harvey Research, Inc. and owner at Arthur Catalanello Consulting; David Dey, director of the Institute for Social Entrepreneurship at Roberts Wesleyan College; Stephen Healey, entrepreneur with experience in consulting, real estate, anti-aging and authorship; Bill Jones, director of Venture Creations incubator at Rochester Institute of Technology; Angella Luyk, founder and chief executive officer of award-winning janitorial company, Midnight Janitorial, Inc.; Robert Spinelli — one of the founders of the Entrepreneurial Expo in 2009, Spinelli teaches at both Nazareth and St. John Fisher Colleges and is currently an investor in ROC Brewery; and Bob Tobin, a lecturer on the faculty of the Simon Graduate School of Business at the University of Rochester.
Registration starts at 7 a.m. The forum runs all day from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Jan. 18, at Monroe Community College, 1000 East Henrietta Road, Building 12, Rochester. Cost for the full-day program is $25 per attendee, which includes a boxed lunch. Student tickets, also includes boxed lunch, can be purchased for $15.
