The Fairport Office of Community and Economic Development (OCED) has announced that construction work for a public promenade on the south side of the Erie Canal to the east of Parker Street bridge has begun.
The approximately $1.5 million project is planned to extend public access to the Erie Canal and includes new boat docks, a pocket park, landscaping, new lighting and other site amenities that will benefit residents, boaters and visitors.
In 2007, the Fairport Industrial Development Agency (IDA) purchased the two-acre parcel that was previously owned by the village’s Department of Public Works.
The project was made possible by several grants secured by the IDA including a $158,000 grant from the Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC) for demolition and asbestos removal and a $584,000 matching grant from the New York State Department of State (DOS).
These funds will be leveraged by substantial Fairport IDA investment to cover the total cost of the project, which includes initial building demolition, soil remediation and construction of a canal breakwall and public promenade.
The construction contract for the promenade has been awarded to Pooler Enterprises. The project team also includes the New York State Canal Corporation, BME Associates, Foundation Design, Jensen Engineers and LaBella Associates.
IDA officials say they hope the new improvements will attract private investment and foster possibilities for residential development on the property.
“This is another successful example of the Village of Fairport providing public improvements to spur private investment,” said H. Kevin Clark, Deputy Mayor and Vice-Chair of the IDA Board of Directors. “This project will expand and enhance our much-treasured canal corridor.”
The project is expected to be completed by May 2013.
