Police officers say they encountered dozens of people fighting during a melee at a bar early Sunday morning, prompting three law enforcement agencies to respond, several arrests and the injury of one officer.

According to city police, the officer was allegedly struck numerous times after attempting to break up a brawl involving multiple people that ended up outside the Canandaigua Brew Club on Phoenix Street.

The Canandaigua police officer sustained contusions to the face and additional injuries to his knee and back, police said.

Byron M. Cole, 23, of 10 Government St., Geneva, was charged with second-degree harassment, second-degree assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Two others were also charged for fighting police and for refusing to leave the area, police said.

Another person, Sarah Pesta, 24, of Geneva, had been previously charged in relation to the brawl. She was charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and State Police assisted with the incident.
