The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is on the march through the Village of Fairport, and local officials anticipate it to affect 200 ash trees in the village.

The Village Tree Board has developed an Emerald Ash Borer Management Plan with the assistance of certified arborist, Andy Pleninger, of Urban Forestry. The plan calls for the removal of 127 ash trees, treatment of another 64 trees, and the monitoring of 47 young ash trees.

“The Tree Board generally does not support the removal of trees that are not dead or diseased, but in this case, given the inevitable destruction that will be caused by the EAB, it appears we have little choice,” stated board chairman Ken Rohr.

Non-ash replacement trees will be planted over the course of the 10-14 year removal effort. The board’s ash borer mitigation plan is also available for review at www.fairportny.com.

The board will hold a public information meeting to discuss the planned tree removals on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Fairport Village Hall for residents and business owners to come with questions and concerns.
