Bio: Daughter of Tammy and John, Shelby played three years of varsity soccer at Fairport. Part of the 2008 Section 5 and Western Regional Championship team, Vakiener earned All-Monroe County honors and participated in the Monroe County Exceptional Senior Games. A three-sport athlete, she also earned league championships and All-Monroe County honors in basketball and lacrosse.
Now a two-sport athlete at RIT, Vakiener was named women's lacrosse Empire 8 Rookie of the Year in 2010 and earned All-Empire 8 first-team honors. She led RIT with 57 points, the second highest single-season total in school history. She started in all 16 games as a freshman, scoring three goals in her first collegiate game on March 2, 2011 in an 15-5 win over York.
On the soccer field as a freshman in 2010, Vakiener started all 18 games for the Tigers. She helped anchor a defense that allowed only 0.94 goals per game and scored her first goal (the game-winner) in her first collegiate game, a 2-1 win over John Carroll. As a sophomore, Vakiener once again appeared in every game for RIT. She finished third on the team in minutes played (1,603) in helping the Tigers to a 6-3 record in conference play.
