Spencerport repeated for the 11th year in a row as the Section 5 Class A wrestling champions on Saturday night at Wayne Central High School.
The Rangers amassed 265.5 points while crowning six champions.
Brockport placed second with 250.5 points and had four champions.
Victor junior Dylan Thireos led the Blue Devils to a third place finish with 156 points as the 113-pounder pinned top-seeded Mike Brown of Irondequoit in the final in 1:03.
The Blue Devils were in sixth place after Friday’s competition, but came on in the wrestlebacks and semifinals to move into third, ahead of Canandaigua and host Wayne Central.
The Braves placed fourth with 144.5 points, followed by Wayne (132.5), Brighton (131.5), Churchville-Chili (80.5), Greece Olympia (61), McQuaid (57), Honeoye Falls-Lima (54), Irondequoit (30), and East Irondequoit Eastridge (23).
The top six wrestlers advance to next weekend’s Super Sectionals at RIT.
Spencerport 99-pounder Jon Haas was named the lightweights Most Outstanding Wrestler and Wayne 160-pounder Frank Affronti was chosen the heavyweights Most Outstanding Wrestler.
HF-L 285-pounder Jack Weldon received the Sportsmanship award.
Spencerport coach Tony D’Ambra was named the Coach of the Year.
The Rangers took a 10-point lead over Brockport going into the finals round.
“Kind of what we expected. Kind of a replay of the (Monroe) County tournament,” D’Ambra said. “We won those head-to-head matchups that kind of determined the outcome of the tournament here.”
D’Ambra said the key was wrestling hard and not worrying about things going on around them.
“We knew it was going to be loud in here, so we kind of wanted to use that to our advantage and feed off the emotion and intensity of the crowd, especially the second-half of the day,” he said. “Every head-to-head match was important, especially in the finals, and we happened to win (3 of 5) of those matches.”
Canandaigua was the last team to beat Spencerport for the sectional title, and happened in 2001. The
Rangers won their 21st consecutive Monroe County League championship two weeks ago.
