The Federation of Social Workers recently became the first organization to bring the national Citypak Project to the Monroe County area.
The project’s goal is to provide the homeless with safe, durable and reliable backpacks that are designed to meet their changing needs and environment.
Union workers and their families gathered and stuffed Citypak backpacks with donated blankets, granola bars, socks, flashlights and toiletries. The backpacks will be distributed to Rochester’s homeless population in the winter months. Savers of Henrietta and MVP Health Care made donations to the project.
Union steward Chelsey Franz discovered the Citypak project in the spring 2016. She brought it to the Federation’s attention and led their efforts in support of the project.
“It is amazing to see everyone’s compassion and commitment to making our community a better place and their willingness to give to those who are most in need,” Franz said. “I feel humbled and grateful to know such selfless and amazing people.”
To date, CityPak has donated over 35,734 Citypaks across 85 cities nationwide.
