Monroe County Clerk Adam Bello recently announced that his office will assist county pistol permit holders in the recertification process that will be conducted by New York State Police.

“With over 50,000 permit holders in Monroe County, there are bound to be a number of questions about this recertification process,” Bello said. “While the clerk’s office is not conducting this process, we can certainly act at a resource center to assist our permit holders in obtaining access to the recertification website and forms.”

The New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013 set forth a new requirement that state pistol permit holders outside of Long Island, New York City and Westchester County be recertified by NYSP every five years.

Permits issued on or before Jan. 15, 2013, will have until Jan. 31, 2018, to recertify. Permits issued after Jan. 15, 2013, will have five years from their original date of issuance, which is stated on each permit, to recertify.

The clerk’s office has public computer terminals that will have access to the NYSP recertification site. Clerks will be available to answer questions and will assist permit holders in contacting the NYSP as necessary. The clerk’s office will also have paper copies of the recertification form available upon request.

“In the overwhelming number of cases, most licensees will be able to recertify without any problem,” Bello said. “Despite the fact that recertifications are performed by the New York State Police, I want pistol permit holders to know that we are available to assist them if they need help with this process. It is my hope that we can help to make this mandatory process easier for all parties.”
