Forty-two kids and tutors from Learning Links tutoring program recently took to the ice for skating during a school break.
“We thought we’d have 15 to maybe 22 interested kids, but not 42,” said Dave Large and Becky Wilson, who coordinated the event. “The kids, some of whom had never seen an ice skating rink before, laced on skates and in no time went from being sprawled on the ice to making it around the oval on their own,” said. “Now they’re real skaters.”
Learning Links tutors and board members, Large, Wilson and Cindy Hunt, also represent Fairport Rotarians, who funded a pizza lunch at the concession stand within Rochester Ice Center. Skaters enjoyed the pizza with a rest and re-energized for more skating.
“Dave, Becky and Cindy had a winning idea for the kids; they give so much ‘fun’ to our kids in so many ways,” said Kate Thon, program director. “Everyone had a ball...the kids and adults.”
Learning is fun, and this was fun,” said Hunt.
Learning Links thanked tutors Karen Hartnett, Judy Gray, Cindy Burkhartt and Kim Constantine for their assistance in the event. Learning Links also thanked skating coaches Katie Serron, Jackie Wilson, Rick Gray, Toby Kamp, Peter Burkhartt and 11-year old figure skater, Kylie Tebo.
“Kudos, too, to bus driver Bob Hinds and Perinton Recreation for getting all of us to and from the rink for this fun event,” added Large.
Learning Links tutoring program is open to Fairport students and has been located at The Pines of Perinton since 2009.
