Fairport-Area Community Education Trust held its third annual community spelling bee in February at Johanna Perrin Middle School.
Hosted by Fairport High School English teacher Dylan Gillett, the event featured adult teams vying for championship recognition. The Brooks Hill School entry, the Brooks Hill Beests, sponsored by JB Sterling Co., claimed victory and received a trophy for the school and gift bags compliments of Casa Larga Vineyards and Wegmans.
In addition to JB Sterling Co., The Corner Bookstore, Crystal Pix, Drama Kids International, Fairport Federal Credit Union, Fairport Music Festival, Fairport Perinton Merchants Association, Fairport Rotary, Fairport Savings Bank, Metrose Custom Homes, Next Level Strength and Conditioning sponsored or entered teams. The event also featured the Johanna Perrin and Minerva DeLand Jazz Club under the conduction of Kristin West and a video showcase.
The nearly $5,000 in proceeds from the event will be distributed to teachers and students through FACET’s Teacher Grant Program, which to date has provided nearly $18,000 in funding for classroom initiatives.
FACET is a nonprofit, independent education foundation established in 2012 by Fairport residents to benefit students and faculty of the Fairport Central School District. By galvanizing community resources for the benefit of education, FACET supports and initiates programs that will impact district students and provides opportunities for all aspects of the Fairport Community to engage in public education.
