It was an honor and pleasure to serve on the Fairport Library Long Range Planning Committee earlier this year. The volunteer committee met for three months and provided recommendations that will help the library focus services and outcomes on critical areas over the next several years.

As a result of my involvement with this committee I decided to run for an open seat on the Library Board of Trustees. I believe my work experience, education, and 23-year residency in the Fairport/Perinton community has prepared me for this position.

I worked at the Perinton Recreation and Parks Department for 35 years before retiring in 2010. I have worked with many individuals and community groups and have learned to actively listen before making decisions that affect the lives of others. I have developed a positive sense of the community and believe my public service would be an asset to this board.

My education has been instrumental in providing me with the necessary tools to be successful. A Master’s Degree in Public Administration focused on the importance of proper planning and resource management, intergovernmental relations, problem-solving and critical thinking. I also completed a Data Processing certificate program from a local business school.  I recommended and purchased the Town of Perinton’s first computer in the early 1980s and have been responsible for the town’s technology ever since.

The Fairport Library provides excellent services and is challenged in these difficult economic times. We must find a way to continue library services that the community wants and needs at an affordable cost to residents. My background in technology will be a plus to the board since technology is changing rapidly and services must continue to change to meet public demand.

Fairport/Perinton was named a Top 100 community twice. The Fairport Library is one of the reasons people choose to live in Fairport/Perinton. The lives of residents are enhanced by the library. Our family has been the recipient of the excellent Fairport Library services for which I am thankful.

I look forward to having the opportunity to serve the Fairport/Perinton community if elected to this important position. Feel free to visit my home page at www.jimdonahue.org and read my goals and more.  Please use the “contact me” section to provide feedback and let me know if I can answer your questions.
