Joel Freedman and I are nearly the same age — I’m a bit older.  So, I can relate to his reflections on growing older (last week's Post).

When we first moved into the Rochester area about 30 years ago, Joel was often in the newspaper for causes that he wanted to represent and some dragons that I thought he wanted to slay. I slew a few dragons myself along the way. But as time has passed and grandchildren have arrived, I can also relate to a renewed appreciation for life, based on Joel’s “awareness, sagacity and calm.”

Of course, life’s got issues, because apparently I’m not totally aware if it’s true that my hearing is failing as family members suggest. Occasionally, I do something dumb. And once in a while, I lose my cool and tell people what I really think. But all in all, aging ain’t bad. And, like Joel, I can take the time to watch and count how many birds come to the feeders stationed outside the living room window.
