Lyons pitcher Derick Fera did not have his best stuff on Tuesday afternoon as the senior attempted to tie the Section 5 career win record of 34.
Fera's total remains at 33 following a 7-4 loss at East Rochester.
“We did know about it but we’re happy he didn’t get it against us,” said ER coach Pat Walsh. “He is a good baseball player. He makes that team go. Derick is a good pitcher, but he also throws a lot of pitches. We’ve faced him nine times for four years now. He has a tendency to get the pitch count up, but we’ve been working on swinging at strikes. His curveball was not going for strikes, and the guys were taking, which good hitters do.
“He would have fit in well with the Brown and White. He’s a gamer. I have gotten to know him over the years through basketball and baseball, and I think the world of him. He’s a great kid.”
Scott Bartucca, who pitched for Waterloo, continues to hold the record with 34 wins, which he achieved from 1978-81.
Three other hurlers also have 33 career wins: Brian Pullybank, Caledonia-Mumford (2002-05), Craig Mott, Red Jacket (1996-99), and Jim O'Brien, Waterloo (1978-81).
The Bombers scored in the bottom of the first when senior pitcher Trey Pascazi was hit by a pitch. He took second on a wild pitch, then scampered home when Matt Burns' ground ball was bobbled, and the fielder held the ball and was unaware as Pascazi rounded third and headed for home.
The hosts added a pair of runs in the third with two out. Walks to Pascazi and Burns, plus a dropped third strike on Rich Hook loaded the bases. Nick Fathergill delivered a double to center to plate the two markers.
The Bombers (7-4) erupted for four runs in the sixth, combining three hits and one error. Sam Hauser had a two-run single in the rally.
The Lions (10-3) finally broke through for four runs in the top of the seventh against Pascazi, but notched his 12th strikeout with the tying run on deck to end the game.
