If you have ever wandered between the Highland Park Bowl and Warner Castle (the Rochester Civic Garden Center), perhaps you have stumbled upon this forgotten sunken garden designed by landscape architect Alling Stephen DeForest (1875-1957).
It is a beautiful terraced series of stairs and landings that navigate the changes in elevation characteristics of the glacial landscape of Highland Park. While some restoration work has been done on this garden, there is still much room for improvement in soil treatment and plantings. To the right, the typical fate of a public space not frequently visited.
The first step in reclaiming this forgotten landscape is the promotion of public awareness and interest. So, if you attend the upcoming Lilac festivities, be sure to visit the sunken garden. Know that it is there.
