Officials report that a paratrooper from Fairport was found dead at a U.S. Army base in Alaska on Christmas morning.
According to a report in The Alaska Dispatch, 25-year-old Grant W. Wise, was a private first class in the 4th Brigade Combat Team.
He was found dead by a single gunshot wound just after 7 a.m. Tuesday in a dorm-like living headquarters at Joint Base Elemendorf Richardson (JBER), according to an Army spokesman.
Wise had been assigned to the paratrooper brigade that had only recently returned to JBER from a tour in Afghanistan. Prior to his assignment with JBER's 25th Infantry Division, he had trained at Fort Bragg, N.C.
Army criminal investigators are recreating the scene at which Wise died. A cermony to honor the soldier's life will be announced at a later date.
Wise's mother Ruth said Friday morning that the family is still waiting to receive more information.
