  • The Greater Rochester International Airport was ranked the 12th most affordable airport out of 101 airports nationwide by CheapFlights.com.
According to the report, the average fare at the airport is $318. Online ticketing company CheapFlights compiled the 101 most-searched airports, and averaged the prices for flights to the most popular destinations.
“The recent Cheap Flights report ranking the Greater Rochester International Airport as one of the top 12 most affordable airports in the United States speaks to the tremendous positive impact that it has on our community at no cost to local property taxpayers,” said County Executive Maggie Brooks in a statement.
U.S. Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-Fairport, said she was pleased with the news. But the veteran congresswoman, who has long advocated for more affordable air travel in Wester New York, said there's more to be done.
“We cannot stop here," stated Slaughter in a release. "In this time of economic hardship, it’s more important than ever that we continue our efforts to reduce airfare for our region, bring in low-cost carriers like Southwest and ensure that Western New York is an affordable and easy destination for residents, businesses and visitors alike.”
The ranking places the Rochester facility well above that of others in the region. The ranking put Buffalo Niagara International Airport at 32nd (average fare of $366), Syracuse Hancock International Airport at 44th (average fare of $384), and Albany International at 82nd (average fare of $458).
Greater Rochester International Airport Director Susan L. Walsh, Esq., said in a statement that the county and Monroe County Airport Authority has been successful in attracting and retaining low cost carriers by working with industry leaders.
The airport offers service from carriers like Jet Blue and AirTran, helping contribute to the low averages for flights. “We are proud that this will ensure the Greater Rochester International Airport remains a ‘Gateway to the World’ for local travelers and their families in the days to come," Walsh said in a statement.
